We Aggies are well accustomed to seeing our beloved first lady of Aggieland, Reveille, at the games and around campus as well as the story behind
her becoming mascot. The few who are not
Aggies seem to struggle understanding the significance of this precious animal. However, most DO understand that Texas A&M University is based on rich tradition and with that, the story begins.
In January 1931, a group of cadets from the Fighting Texas Aggie
Band were headed back to campus after a party in Navasota. Unexpectedly, they hit a small black and white stray mutt. Returning to campus,
they snuck the injured dog into the dorms with the intention of taking her to
the vet school the next day. When “Reveille”, a
military morning wake up call, was blown by a bugler, the dog began barking. Reveille became her name. The cadets fell in love with her and decided
to keep her. Reveille became the
official mascot when she led the Band onto Kyle Field for their half-time
performance.
Reveille was given the honorary title of Cadet General by the U.S.
Army due to the number of officers and soldiers Texas A&M contributed to
the US Armed Forces in World War II. When Reveille I died on
January 18, 1944, she was given a formal military funeral on the gridiron of
Kyle Field. She was then buried at the north entrance to the field, facing the scoreboard so that she can always watch the Aggies outscore their opponent.
Reveille II, III, IV, V, and VI are buried there as well. Reveille VII is retired and Reveille VIII was officially introduced on August 30, 2008.
Reveille is the most revered dog on campus. Company E-2 has the privilege of taking care of Reveille. A sophomore from the unit, designated as “mascot
corporal”, has the ultimate responsibility for her care. Reveille accompanies
the mascot corporal everywhere, including to class and on dates.
To date, all Reveilles have been female with Reveille III being
the first of the pure-bred Collies. Reveille
is addressed by the cadets as “Miss Rev, ma’am.”

Ever say to yourself (or maybe even out loud) as you dress your baby in one of those snuggly pajama outfits, “I wish they made this in my size?” And isn’t it a wonder why kids hold on to their “blankies” from birth to forever? Well big people can experience those same pleasures, especially big people who also happen to be Aggies.
from top to bottom? Create a personal Aggieland under your own roof. Start by covering the floor with officially licensed Texas A&M rug tiles or area rugs. Add one or several A&M flags to cover the walls. A Texas A&M wall clock will help you remember game time. And light up the room with a classic Tiffany lamp designed specifically for Aggies. Hang one over the bar as well as over a pool table. A once drab room can suddenly become the most exciting room in the house. Gig ‘em Ags!
